Blow the Trumpet was commissioned by Barbara and Leland Hendry for the 150th anniversary of St. John’s Church in Olney, Maryland and first performed there in 1991 in a festive celebration by the bishop, pastor, musicians, and congregation.
The piece is quite easy and is for SAB, trumpet and organ.
Based on the hymn tune “Lenox” by L. Edson, the text has five stanzas by Charles Wesley and appears in Christian Harmony (1866) and other collections, identified as “a favorite old tune and song.”
The principal tune appears in the tenor voice of the 1866 version, a common practice of the period.
The complete, original hymn appears in the organ in the final pages of the newly composed piece.
The baritone part may be subdivided where indicated or the parenthetical notes may be omitted. For convenience, the trumpet part has been written in C, but a B-flat instrument may be used or the part omitted. If omitted, the organist may play the trumpet part where possible and if wanted.
